Indian Super League side Mumbai City FC is now leading the race to pen down the signature of Indian international midfielder Anirudh Thapa from Chennaiyin FC for an undisclosed transfer fee, Halfway Football can exclusively confirm.
“Mumbai City are admirers of Anirudh Thapa for a long time and Des (Buckingham) is keen to have him in the squad. Talks between the camps started a long time ago and now MCFC is getting closer to getting his signature,” a source tracking the developments told Halfway Football.
“He’s likely to sign a long-term contract with the club, three years or more. If things go accordingly, Thapa will be donning the Mumbai City jersey in the upcoming season,” the source added.
Anirudh Thapa – Experienced and young midfielder
25-year-old Thapa has been a key player for Chennaiyin FC since joining the club in 2016. He has made over 100 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and providing 17 assists. He won the Indian Super League title with Chennaiyin FC during the 2017-18 season.
The captain of the Marina Machans primarily plays in the defensive midfield position but, can go higher up the pitch and contribute to the attack. Thapa often plays as a box-to-box midfielder helping both defensive and attacking departments of the team.
Thapa is also a regular for the Indian national team. He has made over 30 appearances for India, scoring 3 goals.
