Australian defender Rostyn Griffiths is set to extend his stay with Indian Super League (ISL) club Mumbai City FC, Halfway Football can confirm. The 35-year-old has been a crucial part of the Mumbai City defense this season, helping the team win the 2022-23 ISL League Winners’ Shield.
Griffiths joined Mumbai City FC before the current season, having previously played for clubs in Australia, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, and China. The seasoned defender has appeared in 17 ISL games, scoring one goal and assisting another.
The Australian’s presence in the squad has been a boon for Mumbai City FC, as he was the first choice for Des Buckingham over the ISL-experienced centre-back Mourtada Fall. Griffiths started almost all the games for Mumbai City FC in the 2022-23 ISL season, hence clocking a total of 1290 minutes for the Islanders, 400 minutes more than Mourtada Fall.
Griffiths began his career with Perth Glory before moving on to play for the Central Coast Mariners, North Queensland Fury, and Melbourne City in Australia. He also played for Blackburn Rovers in England and Roda JC in the Netherlands before relocating to China and joining Guangzhou R&F.
Griffiths’ efforts for Mumbai City FC have impressed the club’s management, who want to keep him for the upcoming season. Mumbai City FC will benefit greatly from his contract extension as they prepare to defend their ISL title next season.
Rostyn Griffiths’ contract extension with Mumbai City FC is a testimonial to his performances this season and the club’s faith in his abilities. The Australian’s experience and leadership will be crucial for the club as they will be looking to build on their current success in the coming season.
