Halfway Football can confirm that defender Mehtab Singh has extended his contract with Mumbai City FC. The 24-year-old centre-back, who joined the Islanders in 2020, has put pen to paper on a new multi-year deal.
“Mehtab Singh signs multi-year contract extension with Mumbai City FC,” a source informed Halfway Football.
Mehtab Singh’s career
Mehtab Singh started his football career at the Mahilpur Football Academy. He later joined the youth team of East Bengal and was promoted to the senior team in 2016 and played in the Hero I-League. He also had a short loan stint with Gokulam Kerala FC.
He joined Mumbai City FC ahead of the 2020-21 season and eventually became the Indian Super League champions and also won the ISL League Winners’ Shield. He was also part of the club’s AFC Champions League squad and played six matches in the competition.
He played a total of 29 matches for Mumbai City FC in the recently concluded season across all the competitions, netting four goals. He was an integral part of Mumbai City’s second Shield winning season where he played full 18 matches for the club at the back pairing up with Mourtada Falla nd Rostyn Griffiths.
Mehtab recently made his debut for the Indian national team in the Hero Tri-Nation International Football Tournament against Myanmar on 22 March.
Mumbai City’s preparations
After a title-winning 2022-23 campaign and securing a spot in AFC Champions League, Mumbai City, under Des Buckingham has made some significant moves as they retained Australian centre-back Rostyn Griffiths and midfielder Alberto Noguera. Striker Jorge Diaz is also expected to be retained. Extension of contract of Mehtab Singh, who has been a regular starter and vital at the back for the Islanders marks a strong intend by the club to continue their remarkable form onto the next season.
